Alive Market Essential Oils

By: Molly McCarthy

Essential oils are natural substances derived from plant materials like leaves, roots, barks, seeds, peels, and flowers. They are very concentrated liquids that contain aroma compounds from the plants. Not only do they smell great, but they also contain the healing benefits that the plants offer!

Alive Market’s essential oils are organic, vegan, and NAHA (National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy) certified, so you can rest assured that you are using high quality oils.

Essential Oil Benefits

Alive Market currently offers thirteen different essential oils, each of which has its own benefits for the mind and body. Essential oils are synergistic, meaning they work even better when mixed together, so don’t be afraid to blend!

How to Use Essential Oils

Essential oils can either be inhaled or applied topically. Each method is ideal for different purposes.

Inhalation

Inhalation is ideal for illnesses and emotional support. The most common method for inhaling essential oils is diffusing them. There are many different types of diffusers on the market, but the basic idea is that they release essential oils into the air to be inhaled over a period of time.

Essential oils can also be inhaled directly from the bottle, or applied to a cotton ball, felt pad, or other household item and sniffed from there. This is known as passive diffusion. You can also add essential oils to a bowl of hot water for a facial steam (doing this with eucalyptus and peppermint is awesome when you have a cold!) or you can even use them in a steamy shower!

An example of how to use essential oils for stress or anxiety would be to diffuse the oils of lavender, orange, and lemongrass.

Topical application

Topical application is ideal for physical issues that involve the skin, muscles, etc. Skin is fairly permeable to fat-soluble substances (like essential oils), so when essential oils are applied to the skin, they pass through into the bloodstream.

Essential oils should be diluted before applying directly to the skin. You can dilute them in any type of carrier oil, like coconut oil, jojoba oil, avocado, sweet almond oil, and more. In general, a 2% dilution is ideal for daily use, while a 3-5% dilution is helpful for acute issues.

An example of how to use essential oils for a headache is to dilute the oils of peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus and/or rosemary in a carrier oil and apply to the temples, back of the neck, and any other areas of the head that are affected.

How Do Essential Oils Work?

By inhaling essential oils, or applying them to the skin, you obtain the plant compounds that are present in whatever oils you are using. Essential oils are thought to transmit messages to the limbic system of the brain, which is involved in controlling emotions, and also influences the nervous system, which controls everything from stress levels to immune function.
